Haiti Report #5: Laby Continued
Posted by admin under: Haiti 2009.
I’m back to finish my report on the medical clinic we did in the village of Laby. Many women and children came. We gave children at least 400 worm pills and ran out. The process lead to some funny moments. Two team members gave a little baby the worm pill diluted with water by dropper but the child did not react. They continued to give the child the dropper but no movement, no reaction. At this point they feared the baby was dead and were afraid to pick her up. They looked at each other saying “you do it.” Finally one of them picked her up and to their amazement the baby began to wake up from what seemed like a very long and deep nap.
We saw a lot of pregnant women and did several sonograms on them so they could hear the baby. One woman was practically about to give birth and we wondered if that would be one of our jobs that day but her contractions had not begun. Many of the children had to be treated for scabies and wiped down with anti-fungal cream from top to bottom. One young man had fallen off a mango tree and seriously injured himself. Our medical team examined him and determined he needed to be admitted to the hospital. We drove him back in the front of one of our pick-ups. Small sacrifice for two of our team members who had to brave the ride in the back on the other truck as ominous black lightening clouds loomed in the sky. But God, as always, was faithful. No downpour until we were safely back in the compound.
As a non-medical person on this team I have been blessed and humbled to see these medical professionals handle the small and the complicated problems people bring with patience, love and so much grace. They smile, they pray and they hope for these Haitians that we have learned to love. No one is turned away. Even those who just come for the attention they so rarely receive, are given multivitamins, antacids and Tylenol to see them through the everyday ails they might encounter. So like the Lord who always saw the multitudes with compassion and never turned a little one away. This is HIS and only HIS work. To Him be the glory!
