Haiti Report #6: Back at the Compound

Posted by admin under: Haiti 2009.

Day 4 — We worked from the medical clinic on the compound today. The clinic is recently built and has 6 examining rooms, one of which can be used for surgery and another for dental.  The rooms were stocked with the variety of meds we packed into zip locks the night before. I have packed so many multivitamins and acetaminophen tablets that I can probably tell them apart in my sleep. The meds have all been donated through ministries like OnCall as well as from the doctors who come from California and other areas. This has been yet another testimony of God’s provision. Just when we think we’ve run out of children’s multivitamins a few large jars appear in the pharmacy or in a Rubbermaid bin.

Pastors sent patients from their churches in Hinche. The first waiting area is in an open school house on the compound where they are shaded from the hot sun. From there they go to a small covered porch at the clinic where they wait until the doctors are ready for the next batch. The doctors worked quickly at the clinic. Meds and supplies were more readily accessible in each of the examinig rooms and the flow was more efficient.

The highlight of the day was a mother who walked in with nine-day old twin boys who were absolutely adorable. Everyone wanted a turn at holding them, including Mike, our volunteer cook from California, a big guy who was moved to tears at the sight of these little ones. Afterwards he choked every time he remembered them promising to pray that their lives would be different from the fate of so many children here and that they would serve the lord.

One little girl who was 18 months old seemed limp and unable to use her legs. Two team members, with our team leader interpreting in Creole, tried to get her to crawl to no avail, but they did manage to get her to sit up. They concluded she was well and simply in need of more tummy time to strengthen her limbs. We all breathed a sigh of relief.

Dinner was feast of food and testimonies. One team member with an incredible testimony of abuse, drug addiction and crime shared. It was almost impossible to connect the lovely woman in front of us with the hardened picture she gave. Powerful and incontrovertible evidence that Jesus can change a person from the inside out.

That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.–Psalm 67:2
